llinois Valley Community College students, alumni and friends have another tool to stay connected to the school: the IVCC app.

Individuals with Apple iPhone or iOS Android smartphones, tablets and Kindle Fire tablets are connecting to the free app across the country, said systems administrator Kevin Champlin, who created the app on the Ellucian GO platform.

Students can view phone numbers, the course catalog, their course schedule, grades and events. Parents, alumni and friends can log in to see campus news and calendars.

Other features include campus maps, IV Leader stories, a phone directory with "click to call," cultural and sporting events easily added to personal calendars, "push notification" (instant communication of college closings and emergencies even when the app is closed) and easy access to student email and faculty websites.

When summer and fall registrations begin Thursday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 15, respectively, students will be able to register for courses and view the course catalog.

Champlin said an average of 10 people a day are using the app despite little publicity. Since the app’s soft launch Jan. 9, 181 users from Illinois, Texas, Nebraska, Indiana, Georgia, California, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Louisiana have accessed the site.

To download the app for iPhone, go to the App Store and search for and install Ellucian GO and enter “Illinois Valley Community College” in the search bar. For Android, follow the same instructions through the Google Play Store.

“We have received positive feedback from users,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “In today’s ‘mobile-first’ world, this technology will be indispensable in our efforts to keep students and alumni engaged with IVCC.”
