Two motorists, one of them a 41-year-old Peru man, died in a three-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 80 in Annawan, state police said.
State police are withholding the names of the two deceased – the other is a 27-year-old Chicago man – pending notification of next of kin. A third motorist, 42-year-old Ryszard Kustwan, of Justice, Ill., was not injured in the crash reported at 12:12 a.m. Saturday on I-80, about 4 miles east of the Annawan exit.
There, police said in a preliminary report, the Chicago motorist was headed wes tin a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes. The Monte Carlo struck the Peru man’s 2004 Cadillac DeVille head-on.
Kustwan, headed east in a 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer, was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the now-halted Chevrolet and Cadillac. The drivers of both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
An Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit responded and is continuing the investigation. Eastbound traffic was closed until approximately 9:42 a.m. for investigation and recovery.
