Residents will get more details about what Peru Mall owners plan to do with emptying retail space at a Wednesday, July 22, hearing.
Mayor Scott Harl returned from a Monday meeting with the principals at GK Real Estate in Barrington with an assurance the mall owners would have "a comprehensive presentation" at the hearing at Peru City Hall, 1901 Fourth St. That date, however, is contingent on the coronavirus pandemic diminishing.
“That’s pretty much all they said [Monday]," Harl said of GK's plans for the mall.
As previously reported, GK Real Estate president Garo Kholamian confirmed the plans to convert some of the retail space into multi-family housing units, although the ratio of commercial to residential space was in question even before the pandemic.
Six months ago, Kholamian said, he might have proposed a mix of dining, entertainment, health clubs and housing. The pandemic, however, has so adversely affected those businesses that he said cannot reasonably anticipate how much space will be allocated for each.
“The schedule is just up in the air today depending on how businesses come back,” Kholamian said last week.
