Exactly 6,200 votes were cast over 48 hours, and in the end?
Kingman is king again.
Ottawa High School's venerable Kingman Gym survived a nip-and-tuck vote to advance to the championship finals of the Illinois Gym Showdown, a statewide Twitter poll pitting high school gymnasiums from across the state against each other in a popularity contest. Kingman was up against also-historic Fletcher Gymnasium in downstate Collinsville, winning by the narrowest of margins, 50.1%-49.9%.
The contest is conducted on Twitter through the @hslogoscom account by Seneca High School student Levi Maierhofer. Twitter users simply log on and click on their favorites each round.
Next up, Kingman Gym will go up against a familiar foe — the Quad Cities' historic Wharton Field House, home to the Moline Maroons and once the home venue of the NBA franchise that is now the Atlanta Hawks (then the Tri-Cities Blackhawks). Moline outlasted Quincy in its Illinois Gym Showdown semifinal, 51.5%-48.5%, with a total of 4,837 votes cast.
Ottawa plays Moline annually in boys basketball, with the two trading years hosting the other in what can now be known as the two most popular high school basketball venues in the state of Illinois.
Voting for the Kingman vs. Wharton final is scheduled to open today, with voting closed and the winner scheduled to be announced Monday, June 1.
