Lady Rams claim IESA 7-4A regional
The undefeated Shepherd seventh-grade girls basketball team captured an IESA Class 7-4A regional title, defeating Channahon 27-23 to improve to 26-0 and advance to sectional play Wednesday at Shorewood Troy against Lockport Oak Prairie.
Marlie Orlandi with 11 points, Hailey Larsen with eight and Ella Schmitz with six points paced the Lady Rams in the title game. In the semifinals, Shepherd topped Minooka 27-11 (Schmitz and Larsen seven points, Skylar Dorsey six points).
Marquette girls win 7-1A regional crown
Marquette's seventh-grade girls cagers defeated Holy Cross 44-18 in the semifinals and La Salle Trinity 31-18 to claim an IESA Class 7-1A regional championship and advance on to the Gardner Sectional against fellow regional champion Milton Pope. Avery Durdan (13 points), Alyssa Zellers (11 points) and Makayla Backos (eight points) paced Marquette in the semifinals; while the the title game it was Durdan (12 points) and Zellers (eight).
The 7s prior to that won the Vermillion North Conference Tournament, defeating Milton Pope 45-25 for the championship led by Durdan and Backos with 13 points apiece.
The Marquette 8s placed third in the conference tourney, defeating Marseilles 39-21 (Mary Jo Lechtenberg 14 points, Lilly Craig 10, Emma Rinearson eight), falling to Waltham 32-31 (Emma Rinearson 13 points, Nora Rinearson eight), then defeating Milton Pope 31-19 for third (Emma Rinearson 16 points, Nora Rinearson eight points).
