Malone started the second set with two left-side kills, a nifty push kill into Bluffs' back row and a middle winner to stake her team to a 13-10 lead. Senior Mattie Chapman (six kills, two blocks) then stuffed out a Tiger attack and shared a block with Williams that put Newark ahead 16-13.
"Our blocking was incredible today, and we really used it to our advantage," Chapman said of her team's six blocks overall. "Megan and I, along with K.J. (Friestad), were pretty focused on our play at the net."
Bluffs veteran coach of 28 years Nancy Meyer concurred with Chapman.
"I thought Newark's blocking was very strong, and we tried to be aggressive with our hitting trying to take Malone out of her game," Meyer said. "But she's a great player, and unfortunately we made too many errors by trying to be so aggressive."
