Shepherd 7s victorious again

Shepherd's seventh-grade girls hoops squad improved to 7-0, besting Peotone 31-10. Ella Schmitz scored 12 points, Hailey Larsen five.

The Shepherd 8s fell 30-14 despite eight points from Cheyenne Joachim and four courtesy of Emma Cushing.

Serena soccer wins a pair

Serena Middle School soccer scored two wins recently.

In a 3-2 win over Earlville, Tanner faivre scored two goals, Jason Denbow added another, and assists came from Carson Baker, Denbow and Mikayla Durland. In a 3-1 "W" versus Newark, Faivre, Baker and Denbow scored goals, with Dani Britt assisting twice.

Serena spiker 7s finish 18-0

The Serena seventh-grade volleyball club finished the season undefeated at 18-0 with wins over Earlville (25-13, 17-25, 25-20 led by RayElle Brennan's 10 service points and Jenna Setchell's eight) and Newark (25-16, 25-17 paced by Alyssa Engel's seven service points).

The Serena 8s fell 25-15, 25-18 to Earlville (Paisley Twait five points) and 25-15, 13-25, 25-14 to Newark (Twait seven points, Gabi Welch six).

Rutland spikers finish season

The Rutland "A" volleyball team finished its season at 5-8, playing three matches in the Fox Valley Conference Tournament.

Rutland beat Cross Lutheran 25-12, 25-23 (Maera Jiminez nine service points, Madison Kozlowski seven); fell 25-17, 25-7 to eventual champion Nettle Creek (Jiminez four points); and lost the third-place match 27-25, 25-18 to Crossroads (Jiminez seven points, Camryn Beals and Rebekah Graham each five).

Marquette girls hoops gets 'W's

Marquette's sixth-grade girls cagers received a pair of 10-point performances from Hunter Hopkins, a six- and a nine-point performance from Anna Hjerpe and an eight-point effort from Lizzy Marshall in winning two of three in the Bureau Valley Shootout. The 6s also bested Holy Cross 14-4, led Hjerpe's 10 points.

Marquette's 5s beat Holy Cross 20-1, with Hjerpe scoring 12 and Morgan Collins posting six points.

The Marquette 7s captured the championship of the Holy Family Tournament, winning the title game 30-12 over the hosts led by Avery Durdan's nine points, Alyssa Zellers' seven points and four apiece from Maggie Jewett and Morgan Nelson. Prior to that, the 7s beat Trinity 19-6 (Durdan 13 points) and Parkside 32-7 (Durdan 14 points, Zllers six, Makayla Backos four).

Grand Ridge girls basketball has had a busy week.

The eighth-grade team fell to Parkside 24-17 (Nora Cave nine points, Lexi Jensen four), lost to Odell 26-14 (Cave and Kylie Rhodes each six points), beat Marseilles 24-8 (Rhodes 12 points, Cave eight) and topped Flanagan 36-8 (Jenna Simons nine points, Cave and Jensen eight, Saige McNeill five).

The Grand Ridge 7s fell 20-10 to Parkside and 24-6 to Odell, beat Marseilles 14-6 (Leah Krohe six points, Shaelyn Groesbeck four) and fell 12-3 to Flanagan.

Lady Cyclones score triumphs

Central's sixth-grade girls basketball team won two of three recently — winning 18-4 over Spring Valley (Mary Stisser six points, four each from Aubrey Sullivan and Olivia Fiesel), falling 19-15 to Morris (Haley Ewers six points, Kindley Moore four) and beating Peotone 15-10 (Ewers six points, Stisser five).

The Central 5s won a pair as well — 21-5 over Morris (leading scorers Ashlyn Ganiere and Reese Purcel) and 25-4 over Spring Valley (led by Ganiere, Purcel, Olivia Power and Mara Vedder).
