Clifford Lawrence Varland

Died: September 18, 2019; in Ottawa, IL

Clifford Lawrence “Larry” Varland, 95, of Rutland Township, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Ottawa Pavilion.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home with Reverend Duane Kaufman officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m., prior to services Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brumbach Cemetery in Rutland Township.

He was born November 22, 1923 in Earlville, IL to Clifford A. and Belle (Brumbach) Varland. On Dec. 10, 1949, he married Doris Mae Repka of Naplate who preceded him in death on October 24, 2012.

He was a lifetime Rutland Twp. farmer and was well-known in the area. He was also a former Rutland School board member, lifelong Farm Bureau member, very active in 4-H, and was on the election committee for Rutland Twp. for many years. His farm was named the La Salle County Conservation Farm of the year in 2001.

Clifford enjoyed hunting, fishing, and competition shooting. He won many trophies pitching horseshoes and enjoyed chain saw carving. He was also an avid antique collector with his wife and mother and developed many friendships in all these endeavors. Clifford never met a person he couldn't have a conversation with.

Larry is survived by his children, Alice (Varland) Wold and Mark (Darcy) Varland, both of Ottawa, and Craig (Renee) Varland of Oak Creek, WI; seven grandchildren, Kendra (Sean) O?Connell, Lauren (Corey) Flashing, Kathleen Wold, Adrianna (Ben) Cockrel, Alyssa (Jared) Mundt, Tori Varland and Camron Varland; seven great-grandchildren, Michaela Flashing, Elsa and Ronan O?Connell, Marcus and Atticus Cockrel, and Elijah and Brooks Mundt; one sister, Roberta Jahneke of Champaign; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents; and one sister, Dorothy (Varland) Mulvaney.

Pallbearers will be Corey Flashing, Camron Varland, Jared Mundt, Andrew Wold, Adam Roseland, Kendra O'Connell, and John Price. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Mulvaney, Ronald Varland, Bob and Phil Trumbo, Ben Cockrel, Steve Anderson and Randy Lay.
