Walmart cashier Sam Reynolds' legend has grown.
Facebook and Twitter users came across a post from Streator Walmart congratulating her on winning cashier of the week and decided to add their own mythology. The Facebook post has more than 100,000 comments and 86,000 shares and a Twitter post that’s a screenshot and a thread of comments has 198,000 likes.
“This happened for no reason,” Reynolds said in an interview Thursday. “I don’t even know how to feel. I guess it’s cool. I don’t have time for all the comments.”
A post on Streator Walmart's Facebook page with her photo was simple enough.
"We would like to congratulate Sam as being chosen as our cashier of the week. She has gotten customer compliments recently for her friendly and speedy service!! Way to go Sam!!"
Commenters took over, exaggerating the fantastic thing she's done with tall tales.
"Congrats Sam! I was in Walmart last week and she provided me a girlfriend while painting a portrait of her boss, that's amazing client service!" wrote Arnaud Venditti, receiving 12,000 likes on the comment alone.
Hundreds more of these farcical comments followed.
Reynolds works as a cosmetologist at Great Clips, much to the chagrin of those who came to see her. She only works at Walmart two days a week.
“I haven’t been here all week so today’s the first day I’ve really had anyone come through my line,” Reynolds said. “Nobody mentioned it to me yet but there are people that came from out of town to take a picture of me and we’ve been taking calls all week.”
Reynolds said people at the salon bring it up to her all the time but it's all in good fun; she said everyone’s been really friendly and it’s not like she’s been getting any negative comments over it.
“I wasn’t expecting it to go all out like this or for people to call into the store,” Reynolds said. “Some radio station in Bloomington was like ‘we have to find Sam’ and I got tagged in it like, 47 times. It was a bit much.”
Reynolds said the following week when commenters razzed Blake, who won cashier of the week the week next, it was funny but Blake deserves his due.
“It’s funny but we all work as a team here,” Reynolds said. “Everyone has been like ‘go Sam!’ through the whole thing.”
