While the kids have vacated the schools for the summer, that doesn’t mean the halls go silent.
Ottawa Elementary School District Director of Maintenance Marc Tabor ran through a list of summer projects he’ll be tackling this summer to the school board last week.
One of the newer projects is the addition of more than 1,300 furniture items for Shepherd Middle School that the district received from suburban school districts.
“We’ve received furniture over the years but this is probably the most at one time,” Tabor said.
Tabor connected with facility directors through the Illinois Association of School Business Officials and was notified when districts in Schaumburg and Villa Park were replacing their furniture.
This includes a variety of chairs, desks, bookshelves and more. The furniture is in good shape and will make a nice update for the school, which consists of mostly original furniture.
Tabor will be adding the new furniture at no cost to the district over the summer and rearranging the items to keep similar types of furniture together in a classroom.
The maintenance staff will also be refreshing play mat material, sprucing up the grounds, painting and waxing the floor.
“That’s the kind of thing that brightens a whole room,” Tabor said.
