Streator's 12th Street project included in capital bill

Streator City Engineer Jeremy Palm was pleasantly surprised to hear the city was included in the state's capital bill.

The city will receive $200,000 from the Build Illinois Bond Fund for a grant for the reconstruction of 12th Street from Bloomington Street to Smith Douglas Road.

Palm said the project was already set for 2021 on a five-year program through the Illinois Department of Transportation, which sets aside federal funds. The grant could provide additional funding for the project.

Streator was not the only community in La Salle County listed in House Bill 62 to receive funds.

The bill spells out how the $45 billion will be spent. It calls for $33.2 billion, or about 74 percent of the total, to be spent on roads and bridges, what lawmakers refer to as “horizontal” infrastructure.

Other projects include:

• $150,000 to Illinois Valley Community College for costs associated with capital improvements for an agriculture facility building.

• $200,000 to La Salle for the widening of Wenzel Road.

• $150,000 to Utica for dredging of the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

• $150,000 to Tonica for street reconstruction.

• $135,000 to Oglesby for fire hydrant replacement.

• $145,000 to Peru for roadway improvements.
