Streator council to vote on ordinance changing cigarette possession age

Streator High School Resource Officer George Krasnican and Dean of Students Beau Doty wrote a letter to the City Council a few weeks ago asking them to amend the city's tobacco ordinance to include e-cigarettes and Juuls; council members are aiming just a little bit higher.

The council discussed amending the tobacco ordinance to make the punishment for possessing tobacco the same as purchasing it, something Mayor Jimmie Lansford said was an oversight in the recently passed Tobacco 21 law at the state level.

"The state law didn't change the punishment for possession, only the purchase," Lansford said. "This ordinance makes both purchase and possession similar punishments and keeps us consistent with what is going on in the rest of the state."

The amendment will be voted on at the 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, council meeting.
