A 17-year-old and a 12-year-old of Spring Valley were rescued by boat Saturday afternoon after they hiked into flooded areas of Dee Bennett Road east of Utica.
The duo had departed Canal Street in Utica to ride on the Illinois & Michigan Canal tow path. Their grandmother, a resident of Utica, reported they were riding bikes heading east toward Ottawa.
After calling the girl's cellphone it was determined they were on Dee Bennett Road, near the old halfway house. They had hiked from the canal wading through water as they headed back west leaving them on the roadway surrounded by water.
With the assistance of the Utica Fire Department and the Illinois Department of Conservation Police, a search was conducted using the Conservation Police air boat. At 5:55 p.m. Saturday, they were located on Dee Bennett Road by Conservation Police and firefighters. They were transported back to shore in the air boat then released to their parents.
