Streator's Hansen almost perfect against Seneca

STREATOR — Pitching from the circle doesn't get much better than it ended up being for Streator sophomore hurler Jadyn Hansen on Friday afternoon versus Seneca.

The youthful right-hander had retired 19 consecutive Lady Irish batters and was rocking a perfect game before her good fortune ran out in the top of the seventh needing only two more outs to reach pitching nirvana.

Seneca senior Kylie Winsor lined a single into right just beyond the glove of diving Streator first baseman Grace Schmitz to break up Hansen's try at perfection. After that, Hansen retired the final two batters to earn a remarkable 1-0, one-hit shutout of the Lady Irish here at the SHS Athletic Fields.

Hansen also struck out eight, went 2-for-3 at the plate, started four putouts in the field and delivered the game's only run-scoring hit to completed her day on the diamond.

"Today was a pretty good game for me, obviously, and one that I'll remember for a long time," Hansen said. "I came out feeling strong, but I didn't do it all my myself because my team really fielded well behind me today. We played great defensively against their bunt attempts, and with Seneca you know those are coming.

"Personally, I also hit well today, and I knew I had a perfect game going, but I just couldn't close it out. For me though, all that matters is we got an amazing win against a very good softball team."

Streator (8-4) also received singles from senior Grace Schmitz and junior Ellie Magana as well as a double from freshman Anna Hoffmeyer.

Hansen raised her pitching record to a sparkling 7-1 after the tremendous performance one batter short of the holy grail in the circle.

"I know the crazy winds here today played into the success of both pitchers, but I couldn't have asked for more than what I got from Jadyn," said Streator coach Dawn Williams. "I believe we should have scored more runs leaving too many on base today, but that's a credit to a fine Seneca team that stayed in the game until the end. Without the winds it probably would've been a different ballgame, but that shouldn't take away from the amazing effort Jadyn produced.

"She's come a long way as a sophomore to help lead us this year, and I'm so proud of her."

Not to be overlooked was the pitching prowess of Seneca junior Anne Krull, who allowed just five hits, struck out six, walked three and hit one batter in falling to a current season pitching record of 5-2 while the Lady Irish dropped to 11-3 overall on the 2019 campaign.

"(Hansen) pitched very well, threw strikes, got ahead, and we're a pretty good hitting team," said Seneca veteran coach Dan Stecken. "We had a bunch of outs to her which she fielded very well, a lot of backwards strikeouts, and she just had us handcuffed this afternoon. She pitched one heck of a game. I think she's going to be a good one for Streator pitching the rest of the season and into the future."

The Lady Bulldogs got all they needed off Krull in the bottom of the first inning.

After Magana led off with a walk, Maddie Barichello did the same to push Magana to second base. One out later, Hansen stroked a solid single to center that plated Magana.

"I went up to the plate and felt pretty confident, because I've played against their pitcher before and kind of knew what to expect," Hansen said. "As long as I put the bat on the ball I thought I could get a run home, and I did. As it turns out that's the only run we got, but it was enough."

Hansen cruised through the first 6 1/3 innings perfectly, allowing only four balls to leave the infield on relatively easy flyouts that on any other day might have resulted in different outcomes had it not been for the windy climate.

After Winsor broke up the perfect game in the top of the seventh with a deftly-placed single, Hansen closed out the game in style getting a groundout to short and a strikeout looking.
