Lady Bulldogs rally for OT win in Pops finale

STREATOR — Younger players have dominated the floor minutes for the 2018-19 Streator Lady Bulldogs, as the program has spent this season building for the future.

That didn't change Thursday here at Pops Dale Gymnasium on senior night, but the team's 12th-graders enjoyed a pregame ceremony, spots in the starting lineup and the opportunity to walk off their home floor for the final time as winners thanks to Streator's 42-36, overtime triumph over visiting Interstate Eight Conference rival Coal City.

Amber Ingram, Jennifer Romero, Mariah Depaz and Cali Rogers were the Streator seniors honored.

"It was only right, no matter how much playing time they got at the start of the game, to give (the seniors) the start," said SHS coach Beau Albert, "let them have that moment of fame. They don't see as much floortime as a lot of the sophomores and juniors do, but they come to practice every day, they work their butts off. ...

"They earned that tonight."

A come-from-behind win was also earned at the Pops, as Streator (7-17 overall, 3-7 in the I-8) trailed Coal City (8-19, 3-7) by scores of 17-7 at halftime and 31-29 with one minute remaining in regulation.

Outscoring the Lady Coalers 12-6 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the fourth took care of those deficits, with Chloe Baker's putback of her own miss — set up by a twin towers interior pass from fellow post Natali Haynes — with 43 seconds remaining and a clutch defensive stop forcing the four-minute overtime.

"When we came in at halftime, I said, 'I don't think we can shoot any worse than we have,' " Albert said. "I counted at least nine or 10 bunnies that we missed. We were down 10 points, and we left 18 or 20 easy points out on the floor. ...

"We just didn't shoot very well in the first half, but then we got into a flow and managed to come back."

The Lady Bulldogs trailed for just 20 seconds early in the extra period. A nice take to the basket by point guard Lyniah Anderson — who scored 10 of her 16 points for the night in the fourth quarter and overtime — just 34 seconds into OT gave the hosts a lead they would never relinquish, with Haynes and Dezirea Jordan adding a basket apiece in the extra session.

"We just wanted to work harder, go stronger though the whole game, never give up, keep working," said Anderson, who added a game-best six steals to go with her 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. "As a team, that's our big thing, don't ever give up.

"We wanted to win for (the seniors) on their senior night, so we pushed through."

Haynes tied Anderson for the game lead in scoring with 16 points herself, completing the no-doubt double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds. Baker added eight points and 13 rebounds off the bench, with Jozie Cole tallying three steals, Klaire Phillis blocking three Coal City shots, and Ingram adding two first-quarter rebounds.

For the night, Streator had 24 turnovers to Coal City's 17 and zero 3-pointers to the Lady Coalers' four, but made up for those deficiencies with a 50-32 edge in rebounding.

Makenna Crater (14 points, eight steals) and Brooke Chapman (13 points, eight rebounds) led the visitors.
