It's lucky 7-7-7 for ranked Times-area hoops teams

The numbers 7-7-7 are often associated with winning.

Even moreso for The Times area in this week's Associated Press Illinois Prep Basketball polls.

The Sandwich Lady Indians, Marquette Crusaders and Ottawa Pirates all checked in at No. 7 in their respective polls voted on by a statewide panel of high school sportswriters and released Wednesday afternoon by the AP.

The undefeated Sandwich girls team (24-0) moved up one spot to No. 7 in the Class 3A poll and are awaiting the resumption of the weather-torn Interstate Eight Conference Tournament, where the Lady Indians will play Peotone on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Coal City.

Also-unbeaten Kankakee (26-0) sits atop the 3A poll, with other No. teams including Maine West (23-0) in Class 4A, the HOIC's Eureka (23-2) in 2A and Danville Schlarman (21-2) in Class 1A.

On the boys side, Marquette Academy (18-2 entering play Wednesday night in the Tri-County Tournament) moved up two spots to No. 7 in Class 1A. Providence-St. Mel (16-5) is No. 1 in 1A, while Times-area team Newark is on the "others receiving votes" list, the de facto No. 12 team.

The Ottawa Pirates (16-1) moved up one spot to No. 7 in the Class 3A poll heading into their Friday night showdown at archrival La Salle-Peru. Bogan (19-2) is the top team in Class 3A.

The other No. 1 boys teams are Nashville (21-2) in Class 2A and Belleville West (19-1) in 4A.
