To the Editor:
I wish to express my deep appreciation for the generous response to our annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive in Streator. I recently met with the board of directors and reported that we received $45,641 this year during the 2018 Red Kettle campaign. This amount exceeded our goal of $40,000. It is through the generous use of volunteers (we use NO paid bell ringers) that we were able to exceed our goal again this year.
We had over 600 volunteer bell ringers representing citizens, churches, clubs, and organizations and accounting for the hundreds of hours donated by these generous individuals. A luncheon will be held later this month to distribute certificates and express our appreciation.
We are also grateful for the businesses in the Streator area who allowed us to put a small kettle on the counter in their place of business. Every donation of change helps reach our goal.
These funds are used throughout the year to help with utilities, prescriptions, rent, food baskets, Christmas baskets, clothing, summer camp and other expenses for the needy in the Streator community. This year we were able to help the following: Teen/Angel tree, 118; senior citizen vouchers, 127; and 66 food baskets for families. With the high unemployment in this community, there continues to be much need for this assistance.
Our Thrift Store continues to be successful and is open daily to the public. We continue to accept clean used clothing and all sales revenue stays in the ácommunity and assists local citizens in need.áThis fall, the Rotary Club organized the coat drive in October and assisted with collecting and sorting the free outerwear. Because of this effort, over 1000 coats, hats, gloves and scarves were given away this year.
Again, a sincere thank you to everyone who supported the Streator Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive in 2018. May God bless each of you.
