Streator VFW suspended, calls for members to attend meeting

State committee to help ‘set post on right track’

The Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 has been placed under a 60-day suspension by the state commander for not complying with the organization’s bylaws.

VFW members are being encouraged to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the post building, 305 E. Hickory St. The meeting is for members only. A decision will be made at the Sept. 20 meeting whether to correct the violations, consolidate with another post or surrender its charter.

Ron Hedglin, who is
on the Post 1492 board of directors, said steps already are being taken
to correct violations.

The Streator post didn’t file necessary paperwork with the national organization under its former quartermaster; its new quartermaster has not been bonded, which is a requirement of the national organization; and it initially didn’t pay a required $25 national convention fee, but has since paid the fee, according to Hedglin. Efforts are being made to bond new quartermaster Chris Williams.

A suspension allows a committee of state VFW members to help a new quartermaster set the post on the right track, said Michael De Ross, state adjutant-quartermaster.

“There’s been some progress,” De Ross said. “We need to see some more.”
