Kankakee Community College freshman and former Seneca High School basketball standout Paige Hacker saw her season come to a end at the NJCAA Division II National Championships in Harrison, Ariz., last week.
The No. 11 seed Lady Cavaliers fell in their tournament opener 95-71 to sixth-seeded Cape Fear and then lost 77-60 to No. 14 Macomb in the consolation bracket to finish the season 23-9. Hacker had two points and two steals against Cape Fear and 10 points and two rebounds verses Macomb. For the season, Hacker played in all 32 games for KCC, including 26 starts, averaging 5.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
Track and Field
Nick Olson (Fr., Woodland) placed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 151 feet, 6 3/4 inches at the Bill Correll Spring Classic hosted by Southern Illinois University to open the outdoor season. Olson also finished 23rd in the hammer throw with a 102-1 3/4 effort.
Olivet Nazarene's Maddie Robinson (Fr., Sandwich) placed second of the 32 competitors in the shot put with a heave of 41-4 1/2 at the 27th annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Invitational this past weekend. She also placed 23rd in the discus after a toss of 95-11.
Shelby Keen (Fr., Woodland) shot an 84 to help Knox College earn the team championship at the weather-shortened Illinois College Spring Invite.
Ohio University opened Mid-American Conference play dropping two of three, including Sunday's rubber game 3-1, to Bowling Green. Pitcher Jake Roehn (RS-Sr., Sandwich) fired a scoreless 1 2/3 innings with a strikeout in the series finale. On the year, Roehn has made 10 appearances for the Bobcats (12-10, 1-2) and is 1-0 with five saves. He has 13 punchouts in 12 innings of work and hasn't given up a run while allowing just four hits.
Illinois Wesleyan University split a doubleheader with Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, winning the opener 6-1 but falling 8-1 in the capper. Hunter Simon (Fr., Seneca) pitched a scoreless frame with a strikeout for the Titans (9-4) in the second game. He has now thrown four innings in four appearances and fanned seven.
Rockford University won three straight games from Northland College over the weekend, winning 7-0, 9-0 and 9-4. Bryce Hinkelman (Sr., Marquette) had two hits in the opener and finished the series with four hits and four RBIs. Dalton Morris (Sr., Marquette) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Regents (3-8) in the opening game of the set. Hinkelman is now hitting .425 with two doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs, while Morris has fanned 11 in 8 2/3 innings on the bump.
Waubonsee College is off to a great start, winning 12 of its first 16 contests. Arik Applebee (So., Seneca) is hitting .235 with three doubles, two triples and seven RBIs for the Chiefs. Justin Sartori (Fr., Sandwich) is second on the club with a .449 (22-of-49) batting average and has eight doubles and 16 RBIs, as well going 1-0 with seven strikeouts in six innings in three pitching appearances. Jordan Isham (Fr., Sandwich) is 3-for-7 with a double and a pair of stolen bases, while posting a 2-1 mark in three starts on the hill with 20 strikeouts in 20 innings.
University of Toledo opened Mid-American Conference action with a three-game sweep of Akron over the weekend. Pitcher Maggie McGurk (Fr., Streator) fired a scoreless inning in the Rockets' 13-5 Game 1 win over the Zips. McGurk has now made 10 appearances for UT (17-12, 3-0) pitching 16 1/3 innings, striking out eight with an ERA of 2.14.
Lake Land College is 26-11 overall and currently on a four-game winning streak. Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator) leads the squad with 43 RBIs and is second in batting average at .421. She also has 12 doubles, four home runs and has hit safely in 19 of the Lakers' last 21 games. Rachel Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is 4-for-10 with two triples and seven knocked in, while pitcher Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru) is 2-0 in six games with an ERA of 4.38.
Jaclyn Thompson (Jr., Serena) has made 10 starts (six complete games) for Upper Iowa University (13-7) and has posted a 4-3 mark with 48 strikeouts in 56 innings. Opponents are hitting just .194 against Thompson this season.
Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) is batting .280 with seven doubles, a triple, 12 RBIs and six stolen bases for West Virginia Tech University (7-19, 1-3 River States Conference) on the season.
Clarke University pitcher Chelsea Fogarty (So., Ottawa) struck out eight in a complete-game win over Missouri Valley College on Saturday. Fogarty has appeared in 12 games (11 starts, nine complete games) for the Pride (6-14, 4-4 Heart of America Athletic Conference) this year with 41 strikeouts and an 3.38 ERA in 66 1/3 innings in the circle.
Molly Angell (Sr., Ottawa) helped Millikin University to a 7-2 victory over the University of Dubuque, teaming with No. 1 doubles partner Melissa Donovan for a 8-6 triumph and then picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
