The Serena Community Unit School District No. 2 board accepted the superintendent's resignation Thursday night at its monthly board meeting.
Marty Felesena submittted his resignation letter, dated March 22 and effective June 30. He has accepted a new position with the Erie school district. In addition, the board approved placing him on paid administrative leave until he begins his new position. Board President Neal Rosengren said he was unable to share more information at this time as to why Felesena was placed on administrative leave, but clarified he was not fired.
Felesena has been with the district for four years.
"This district should be very proud of what has been accomplished in recent years, but there is still an extraordinary amount of work to be done in Unit 2 to help it reach its maximum level," Felesena wrote in his resignation letter. "This district has an infinite amount of potential, and I trust and hope that it will continue to strive to match its practices with these tremendous opportunities."
Rosengren said the district is working through the details of finding an interim superintendent.
