Warm weather, hot bats for Bobcats against Indians

SOMONAUK — Mother Nature released her icy grip on northern Illinois on Thursday, and the Sandwich Indians and the Somonauk Bobcats took advantage of it to play a nonconference baseball game in Somonauk.
While it wasn’t t-shirt and shorts weather, people had the option of leaving their winter coat at home as it was sunny with temps in the 50s at game time. The Bobcats were able to use some hot pitching, as three pitchers allowed four hits, and used a patient offense to coax five walks from three Indians pitchers to jump out to an early 3-0 lead on their way to a 10-3 home win.
“They (Somonauk) swung the bat real well and capitalized on some of our mistakes in the field,” said Sandwich baseball coach Jason VanPelt. “They pitched pretty well, and that is how the game went.”
Junior starting pitcher Nolan Wegener got the Bobcats going from the mound, as he fanned the first five batters he faced and ended the day with seven whiffs in three innings of work. Wegener needed just 12 pitches to strike out the side in the top of the first and nearly did it again in the second. After striking out Austin Salemi and Indians starting pitcher Zach Hix, Wyaytt Murphy grounded out to Bobcats third baseman Sam Brooks to retire the side.
After making it through three complete innings, Wegener threw 40 pitches, allowing no runs on two hits. Andrew Johnson came on in relief of the junior fireballer.
“The idea behind it was that we were going to run Nolan out and let him pitch the whole game,” said Somonauk coach Troy Felton. “As we got thinking about it, it's early in the season and it doesn’t make sense to run a guy out there for that many pitches.”
Felton was also happy with the work of Johnson and Brooks, who also came on in relief.
“It was truly a team effort on the mound when you throw that many guys in a game to get a win like that,” said Felton.
While Wegener was finding success on the mound, Hix wasn’t having the same luck. The Bobcats got to the senior pitcher early, beginning in the home half of the first inning. Brooks started the Somonauk offensive attack by drawing the first of his three walks on the day and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clayton Morris. A single on a 3-1 pitch to Brady Kreiter sent Brooks to the plate with the Bobcats' first run of the game.
Kreiter then stole second, and a single by Wegener chased Kreiter home. Steve Kenyon’s single scored Wegener, and Somonauk (2-0-1) found itself with a 3-0 lead.
The edge grew to 5-0 during the Bobcats' next at-bat. Another Brooks walk and stolen base put him on second base, and this time Morris laid down a sacrifice bunt that helped get Brooks over to third.
Brooks then came home after Wegener belted a triple to right field, and the latter came home on a Hix wild pitch.
Sandwich (1-3) then touched Bobcats relief pitcher Johnson for three runs to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Hayden Isham opened the proceedings with a single and scored when Hix reached on an error. Hix and Murphy both came home on a bases-clearing triple by first baseman Sean Smith.
Somonauk put the game out of reach by scoring four runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.
Kreiter led the Bobcats offense with two singles and a double. Wegener added a triple and a single. Each had 3 RBIs.
