Ask The Times: Ottawa smoke detectors

Q. I heard Ottawa has a law that smoke detectors have to be wired to the building instead of being battery operated. Is that true?

A. For single-family or two-family dwellings, the city code allows battery-operated smoke detectors. However, for dwellings housing three or more families, plus in commercial and industrial buildings, the city ordinance requires smoke detectors to be permanently wired into the structure's AC power line.
