PHOTO: Ottawa canal bed trees cleared

The rewatering project for a section of the Illinois & Michigan Canal in Ottawa got going Monday with the removal of trees in the canal bed. The majority of the work is set for summer, but the Illinois Department of Natural Resources required the tree removal be accomplished by April 1. The deadline was to prevent the trees from being used as roosts by Indiana bats after they come out of hibernation. The bats have been designated endangered species by the federal and state governments. The work was done by The Tree Guy Tree Service of Ottawa.
