AREA ROUNDUP: Cru, Lady Irish each leave Jacksonville at 3-0

JACKSONVILLE — The Marquette Academy baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday — 11-10 over IVC and 15-2 against Princeville — at Lenz Field in Jacksonville to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Marquette used two hits each from Logan Komater (triple, RBI), Jack Snook (double, 2 RBIs) and Luke Couch (double), plus Bryce Foster's 3-RBI day to top the Grey Ghosts. Starter Max Mitchell (4 2/3 IP, 9 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 6 K) recorded the win, while Shane Reynolds (2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) earned the save.
The Crusaders then received a 3-for-3 game from Nate Melvin and 11 strikeouts over the first four innings from Foster to defeat the Princes. Foster (double) also went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, Zach Dyche added three runs batted in, and Bryce Jones fanned two in an inning of relief work.
 
Montini 11, Sandwich 9
At Lombard, the Indians fell behind 10-0 to the Broncos after three innings before scoring nine runs over their final four at-bats, but came up a couple runs short.
Wyatt Murphy had a pair hits and two runs batted in for Sandwich (1-1). Andrew Gipe and Zach Hix had two RBIs as well. Sean Smith (1 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) took the pitching loss.

Princeville 8, Marquette 7
Marquette 8, Galesburg 3
At Lenz Field in Jacksonville, the ICA Class 1A preseason No. 8 state-ranked Lady Crusaders (1-2) split their final two games.
Marquette was edged 8-7 by No. 2-rated Princeville, as the Lady Princes pushed across the contest-deciding tally in the home half of the seventh. Aubrey McCallum went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Crusaders. Emily Owens (double), Allie Snook and Mallory Martini (2-for-3) all had a pair of hits. Makenna Tkach (6 IP, 7 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 7 BB, 9 K) took the pitching loss.
Marquette used a seven-run top of the sixth inning to defeat the Class 3A Galesburg Silver Streaks 8-3. Owens had a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the offense. Makena McConnaughhay also doubled. McCallum drove in two runs as well. Tkach went the distance in the circle to record the win, allowing three runs (two earned) and 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
 
Seneca 7, Princeville 5
At Lenz Field in Jacksonville, the ICA Class 2A preseason No. 15 state-ranked Lady Irish capped off a perfect season-opening weekend by defeating the 1A second-rated Lady Princes.
Taylor Bushman and Lyda Robinson each had a pair of hits and two RBIs apiece to lead the Seneca (3-0) offense. Claudia Morris added an RBI double.
Maggie Carpenter went the distance in the circle to record her first career varsity win. She allowed five runs (two earned) and three hits with seven walks and nine strikeouts.

Pirates open in Metamora Invite

At the Metamora Invitational, the Ottawa Pirates had a rough start to their season, dropping three matches — 5-0 to the hosts, 5-0 to Moline and 5-0 to Springfield — on Saturday. 
The Pirates did have a couple close calls against Metamora and Moline. At No. 1 singles, Jack Marvel lost 6-7 (4), 4-6 to Metamora's Zack Lambiase, Vadim Cheli fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to Keegan Deshone, and the No. 1 doubles team of Nathan Meyer and Andrew Hancock lost 6-2, 7-5 to Ethan Greenfield/Michael Poppen. Then against Moline, Tyler Olesen and Logan Olszewski dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, while the No. 3 duo of Ryan Durango and Gorge Leon lost 6-1, 6-3.
