A group of Illinois Valley Community College students are organizing a peaceful, 17-minute walkout on campus at noon Thursday, March 22, in honor of the 17 students and staff killed in the Feb. 14 Parkland, Fla., high school shooting.
Although walkouts took place at schools across the country March 14, IVCC was on spring break.
The March 22 event is not an officially sponsored college event, and per the student organizers, is not partisan or political.
Students who have class that hour and intend to participate should consider their instructor's attendance policy. Faculty teaching that hour are asked to remind students of their attendance policy. Questions should be directed to IVCC's Human Resources office at 815-224-0426 or email@example.com.
"We respect each individual's right to peacefully demonstrate and exercise their freedom of expression, thought and speech," said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran in a press statement.
