It is incorrect to say the sand mines in Wedron are owned by Fairmount Santrol, the company's attorney says.
In an email to attorney Sheryl Churney, The Times referred to Fairmount Santrol as the owner of the mines, which is seeking county permission to expand.
Churney disagreed with the wording of Fairmount as "the owner of the mines."
"The mines are owned by Wedron Silica Company and Wedron Silica is the applicant for the Special Use Permit," Churney wrote in an email last week.
She said references to Fairmount as the owner would be "inaccurate and misleading."
Wedron Silica is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fairmount Santrol, a publicly traded company based in Ohio.
The Wedron facility opened in 1890 and has had a number of owners over the years. According to Fairmount's 2016 report, 81 percent of the company's total volume was produced at Wedron.
The total net book value of the Wedron facility’s real property and fixed assets as of Dec. 31, 2014, was $78.5 million, according to the SEC report.
