Report says defendant is fit

A psychiatrist has found a Streator man, who allegedly threatened La Salle County States' Attorney Karen Donnelly, again is fit to stand trial.

Riddick R. Jaynes, 24, is charged with using a cellphone in March 2017 to communicate a threat to Donnelly. Jaynes was determined to be mentally unfit in July and sent to a state facility for treatment. At a court hearing Thursday, Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. said a new psychiatric report says Jaynes has regained fitness.

A hearing was set for Friday, March 23, at which the prosecution and defense will go over the report's finding. Jaynes was returned to the county jail Thursday. Jaynes had been represented by Peru lawyer Douglas Olivero, but the public defender took over Thursday, although Jaynes said he might decide to represent himself.
