Boater safety courses will be offered at visitor center

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Illinois Waterway Visitor Center, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will offer four free Illinois Boating Safety education classes this spring and summer.

Classes are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. the following Saturdays: April 28, May 19, June 23, July 14 and Aug 18 and are open to everyone age 11 and older. Only one eight-hour class is required to complete certification. Students under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Preregistration is required, and can be made by calling 815-667-4054.

This class is recommended for people who are new to boating, families that enjoy weekend boating adventures, or seasoned boaters who would just like to brush up on their safe boating knowledge. Anyone over the age of 12 can be certified.

This is a classroom-based safety class and will not include any on-the-water experience. Upon successful completion of the class and exam, participants will be issued an Illinois DNR Boat Safety Certification. The completion certificate may also save participants money on their boat insurance.

The indoor class will include instruction in basic boating safety, equipment and requirements, motorboat registration and titling, navigation, basic maintenance, emergency measures and Illinois and federal boating regulations.
