LaVerne 'Vern' Strothman: 1925-2018


SANDWICH — LaVerne “Vern” Strothman, 93, of Sandwich, passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

He was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Serena, the son of Andrew and Lillian (Benson) Strothman. He married Annabelle Morel on Jan. 16, 1944, in Wayland, Mo.
He was a member of United Church of Sandwich and formerly a member of the Sandwich Moose. Vern ran a dairy farm in Serena, during winter months worked at the Round House in Aurora, moving locomotives in and out, and worked at Western Electric as a supervisor, retiring in the early 1980s.
In Vern’s retirement he continued working as a grounds keeper at Cedardell Golf Course in Plano, cleaning Idle Hour Lanes, and delivered balloons for Balloons Aloft up until just a few days before his passing. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, gardening and playing euchre and cribbage. Most of all Vern loved time spent with family and his many friends.
He is survived by three children, Larry (Cathie) Strothman, of Sheridan, Judy (Gary) Anderson, of Sandwich, and Tami (John Taylor) Wig, of Sandwich; seven grandchildren, Pamela Miller, Larry (Dani Bulian) Strothman Jr., Scott (Maggie) Strothman, Mike Anderson, Kristin (Darrin) Boyer, Amber (Jeremy) Mager and Joe (Steph) Wig; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Annabelle.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at United Church of Sandwich, 512 E. Lions Road, Sandwich, with Pastor Steven Mindrup officiating. Burial of his urn will follow in Elerding Cemetery in Sheridan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Church of Sandwich or the donor’s choice.
