AREA ROUNDUP: No locals advance at Oregon 1A wrestling sectional

OREGON — It was tough going for the 14 local participants at Saturday's IHSA Class 1A Oregon Wrestling Sectional as none advanced to this weekend's state tournament.

Marquette's Hunter McAlpine won three matches at 220 pounds, while teammate Keegan Jaros (195), plus Seneca's Ben Virgo (113), Jackson Beene (145) and Mason Dooley (170) each captured two victories apiece.

For Seneca, Wilson Widman (106) lost twice by fall, first to St. Bede's Dominic Bima at 1 minute, 17 seconds and then to Gage Mowry of Rock Island Alleman at 1:01. Virgo opened with a win by fall (:16) over St. Bede's Beau Gerber, but lost (fall, 3:20) to Alleman's Billy Taylor in the quarterfinals. He then earned a 10-0 major decision over Sherrard's Kaiden Jones in wrestle backs, but fell to West Carroll's Trapper Hartman by a 6-0 decision. At 120, Brett Yeggie lost both of his matches by fall to Stillman Valley's Dayne Thomas (3:37) and Alleman's David Dierickx (3:39), while at 132, Zane Comrie had the same fate to Alleman's Jack Patting (3:30) and Aurora Christian's Andrew Stewart. Benne opened with a 5-2 loss to Stillman Valley's Logan Lagerhausen, but rebounded with wins over Lena-Winslow's Jeremiah Hermann (7-5) and Mercer County's Seth Speaker (fall, 5:30) before losing 5-3 to Orion's Trent Sharpman. At 152, Joey Hatz lost both of his matches by fall to Lena-Winslow's Jason Hermann (3:10) and Dakota's Andrew Wenzel (3:02). Dooley dropped his opening match (fall, 3:11) to Durand's Alex Hoffman, but bounced back with pinfall triumphs over St. Bede's Daryl Senica (1:50) and Sterling Newman's Mason Newman (1:58), before losing by fall (3:54) to Mercer County's Steve Speaker. At 182, Levi Clark fell by fall to both Alleman's John West (1:50) and Genoa-Kingston's Sean Logan (2:24). Nathan Elliott lost his opening match at 195 (fall, :53) to Rockridge's Collin Schmidt, then pinned Genoa-Kingston's Will Butterfield at 1:28, before losing (fall, 3:27) to Princeton's Dallas Hill. At 285, Jacob Hampton lost both of his matches by fall to Orion's Logan Lee (1:58) and Byron's Tyler Eisbury (1:24).
For Marquette, Logan Petre fell in both of his matches at 126, first to Morrison's Ryan Kennedy 6-5, and then to St. Bede's Charles Korey 16-0. Jaros opened with a victory by fall (1:31) over Amboy's Chris Morris, but lost by fall (2:46) to Fulton's Eli Pannell in the quarterfinals. He then picked up a win by fall (3:41) over Erie's Mack Fox in the wrestle backs before dropping a 9-4 decision to Ashton-Franklin Center's Colin Kaecker. McAlpine began the day with a pinfall (5:54) triumph over Stillman Valley's Diego Tarara, but lost to Princeton's Chase Tatum by fall (:26) in the quarterfinals. In the wrestle backs, McAlpnie earned victories over Kewanee's Dalton Clague (fall, 2:36) and Sherrard's Karsyn Hanson (11-8), before dropping a 12-2 major decision to Aurora Christian's Angel Jaimes.

Somonauk's Joey Rowan lost both of his matches at 160 by fall, first to Lena-Winslow's Colin Dvorak (5:28), and then to Alleman's Ryan O'Hern (3:47).

At Shabbona, in a rematch of last season's third-place game at the Class 1A state finals in Peoria, the Norsemen (18-7) trailed 19-13 after one quarter, 42-27 at the half, and 65-39 heading to the fourth in their loss to the Eagles.
Senior guard Dylan Patrick led Newark with 23 points.
 
Freshman boys basketball
Streator 43, Coal City 42 (2 OT)
At Pops Dale Gymnasium, Mason Telford scored 14 points to lead Streator (12-9) to the double-overtime, Interstate Eight Conference win over Coal City. Dewayne Nutall and Max Baker added nine and eight points, respectively.
