STARVED ROCK CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE

The Starved Rock Civil War Round Table met Jan. 17 at Ottawa High School with 33 in attendance. Dan Schott presented a program on "The Other Wallace."

Lewis Wallace was a Union general from Indiana where claim to fame came after the Civil War as the author of the novel Ben Hur. Criticized for his actions at Shiloh by Grant he was removed from combat duty. Later, he did command Union forces at the battle of Monocacy and the defense of Cincinnati. After the war he served on the court-martial of Lincoln's assassins and was president of the court-martial of Henry Wirz, commandant of the infamous Confederate Andersonville prison. Emma Thiry, Tom Shuck, Paulo DePaoli, Mary Walsh, Rob Mellen, Keith Stevenson, Pete Snook and Drew Jessen won Civil War book door prizes.

The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at OHS. Scott Buennemeyer will present a program on Winfield Scott. Anyone interested in the Civil War is welcome.
