Ask The Times: Least snowy winter

Q. Given the lack of snow so far this December, what is the least amount of snowfall Illinois has received over a winter?

A. 9.2 inches in 2012, according to Illinois State Water Survey. Last season came close to setting that mark at 9.6 inches. The snowiest winter was 44.5 inches in 1979. Snowfall is accumulated from July 1 of the first year to June 30 of the second year, meaning the 2016-2017 winter would be categorized as 2017.
