Dwight turns up heat to cool down Lady 'Dogs

STREATOR — Saturday morning’s bright and early nonconference meeting between the Dwight Lady Trojans and the Streator girls basketball team featured a pair of one-win teams with reasonable hopes of doubling their win total.

Dwight’s ability to score in spurts and turn up the pressure when it needed to, however, equated to the Lady Trojans notching win No. 2 instead of the Lady Bulldogs.

Dwight defeated Streator here at Pops Dale Gymnasium, 51-42. Dwight’s Chloe Butterbrodt scored seven of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs committed nine of their 23 turnovers in that final stanza as the Lady Trojans (2-3) held off a late Streator (1-6) charge.

“Like I told the girls, there were a couple of times where their minds maybe went blank and we made a couple mistakes that ended up costing us,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Rory Bedeker. “It seemed like every time we made a silly mistake, Dwight got two points out of it. We’d cut it to six, eight points, and they’d get four points real quick.

“But overall, I was happy with the pressure we were able to put on Dwight and how hard the girls were playing. We made some shots and actually limited our turnovers for the most part until the fourth quarter.”

Streator scored the game’s initial basket 100 seconds in when Mallory Aukland handed out the first of her five assists on the day, finding freshman center Natali Haynes in the paint for two. The Lady Bulldogs retook the lead at 5-3 on an Aukland 3-pointer, but never led again as Dwight scored the game’s next four points and maintained an advantage that wavered between seven and 12 points for most of the remainder.

The Lady Bulldogs’ rallies were answered and thwarted time after time by quick, turnover-fueled Dwight scoring bursts fed by the visitors turning up the full-court pressure.

“That’s exactly what we did. We started pressuring more,” Lady Trojans coach Jeff Froelich said. “Then we started to press them even a little bit more at times when we needed to, and we did that (to turn back Streator rallies).

“Hopefully this can carry over to next week for us.”

Haynes flirted with a double-double, posting nine points, nine rebounds and both of SHS’s blocked shots. Ali Talty scored seven points, and fellow 12th-grader Megan Gubbels scored five as did Aukland, also a senior, to go with her five assists. Skyler Bedeker, Amber Ingram and Chloe Baker put in four points apiece, with Taytum Williams contributing three points and as many assists.
