A 28-year-old man died from injuries sustained during a fight at a downtown La Salle bar Friday morning.
The man was identified as Nick Puyear, from Peru, by Bill Hintz, Winnebago County coroner.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
La Salle police officers responded to reports of a large fight at 516 On First in La Salle. A police press release stated officers found Puyear lying unconscious on the floor. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Illinois Valley Community Hospital and he was then transferred to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m. Friday.
An investigation is ongoing by the La Salle Police Department, state police and the La Salle County State's Attorney's Office.
Police Chief Robert Uranich said "numerous" people have been interviewed and they are awaiting autopsy results from the coroner.
This is the second homicide to occur at the location in the past decade.
Andrew Sibley, 25, of Utica, was punched and then fell and hit his head while outside the bar on Sept. 21, 2007. At the time, the bar was Two Fools. Sibley died the next day.
Liquor license suspended for 'indefinite period'
Mayor Jeff Grove confirmed the liquor license for the bar has been suspended for an "indefinite period."
The mayor said the license has been suspended during the investigation process and the bar has not been fined.
Grove said the owner has been cooperative with the city.
"With the seriousness of the occurrences we're covering all our bases," Grove said.
The bar owner could not be reached for comment.
