HERSCHER — For the first 12 minutes the Streator Bulldogs stood toe-to-toe with the third-ranked team in Class 4A, the Herscher Tigers.

In fact, the Bulldogs found themselves ahead of Herscher 14-13 at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter after SHS senior quarterback John Benckendorf scored on a two-yard run.

The Tigers roared right back to take the lead at 21-14, as Tyler Jarnigan scored on a five-yard touchdown run, but Streator answered back with another Benckendorf scoring run of one yard to tie the game at 21-21.

Herscher (4-0, 2-0) then ran away from the Bulldogs, as the host Tigers outscored Streator (1-3, 0-2) by a 41-7 margin in the middle two quarters and registered a 69-28 win in an Interstate Eight Large Conference game at Seebach Field in Herscher.

“I can’t fault our kids, they played hard,” said SHS head coach Brian Hassett. “I’m proud of our kids, because they played really hard. We are going to continue to get better.”

Jarnigan started the Tiger scoring in the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-21 Herscher. Then the Tigers senior quarterback went to work through the air and threw three straight touchdown passes — 10 yards to Matt Dorsey, seven yards to Tyler Stuart and 22 yards to Luke Cross — and the Tigers were up 48-21.

The Bulldogs cut it to a 20-point deficit when Benckendorf found Lucas Sharisky for a five-yard touchdown pass, making it 48-28 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jarnigan continued throwing touchdown passes, as he hit Cross with a 12-yard pass and also scored his third touchdown run of the game from nine yards out. Carter Hendrix came off the bench to relieve Jarnigan in the fourth quarter and found himself in the end zone with 2:24 left in the game on a 20-yard run.

For the night, Herscher rolled up 549 yards from scrimmage to 226 for the Streator Bulldogs. Jarnigan led all rushers with 168 yards on 13 carries, and senior running back Anthony Koranda added 140 yards on 14 carries. Through the air, Jurnigan completed 12 of his 18 passes for 170 yards.
Streator was paced on the ground by sophomore Tray Fisher, who gained 117 yards on 20 carries. Maurice Cunningham had 27 yards on eight carries, and Dawson McStoots had nine carries for 27 yards.
“Fisher, Cunningham and McStoots ran the ball well, and John (Benckendorf) made a couple of nice passes, plus I think we protected better,” Hassett said. “We have to tackle better and shore up our defense, that’s for sure, but I am proud of our kids.”
Earlier in the game, Jarnigan gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead after the Bulldogs went three-and-out on their first series with a two-yard pass to Dorsey that started the scoring. Streator's Riley McCurdy made that a short-lived lead, as he returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for the touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Streator is back in action next Friday at home against also 1-3 Sandwich.
