Another big Cru 2nd quarter whips Sobos

SOUTH BELOIT — The South Beloit football team came into Friday night’s home game knowing Marquette was going to be a bear to beat.

It turned out the Crusaders were a sleeping bear at first, but after a long Sobos touchdown drive threw some cold water on them, they woke up in a fury.
After the hosts used six minutes to chew up 72 yards to paydirt and added the conversion points for an 8-7 lead, the Cru figured it was time to jump out of their pajamas and play ball. A 24-yard scoring run by Max Donahue started a seven-minute stretch in which MA scored 41 points — including another Donahue score, a Zach Dyche run and interception return for TDs, and a 65-yard punt return touchdown by Jack Snook — and start it toward a 67-8 victory over the Sobos here on Friday night.
Snook had a tremendous game, returning that and another punt for scores and breaking a 20-yard TD run to make it 54-8 at intermission and cap the Crusaders’ second 40-point second quarter in the last three games. That one-sided score came despite having the ball for only 6 minutes, 17 seconds of the 24-minute clock.
“We came out here sleepwalking, and it was very frustrating,” said Cru coach Tom Jobst, his club now 4-0 and outscoring foes 220-36 in those games, “but other than our first possession (a three-and-out), I was happy with it. We finally came out of it and started playing ball again. South Beloit plays hard. The scoreboard doesn’t show how hard those kids play, and I give them a lot of credit … but everybody got to play and played well for us. It’s nice to see some points coming from special teams and the defense, too.
“I can believe we didn’t have the ball much in the first half, but the time of possession stat doesn’t mean anything if you’re scoring touchdowns. We like to possess the ball if we can, but we’ll take the touchdowns any day.”
The first series for each team ended in no first downs and a punt, but South Beloit’s kick was grabbed by Snook at the Sobo 42 and returned for the game’s initial score.
The Sobos answered with their monster drive which started with senior Seth Norris at quarterback, but he soon gave way to classmate Adam Pilz, their hero with 276 of their 286 total yards in last week’s 62-12 loss at Gould Stadium. He ended up tossing an eight-yard jumpball TD to end D’Andre Dogan, then hit Denny Passialis for the conversion and an 8-7 SB lead.
That’s where the Cru smelled the coffee.
Four plays later, Donahue got his first score and, after a short Sobos punt, Dyche (seven carries, 76 yards) scored on a three-yard burst. Those were followed by Donahue from 16 yards out, Snook’s 65-yard punt return, Dyche’s 13-yard interception return and a 35-yard scoring pass from Logan Komater to Nick Duchon, the last at the 6:15 mark making it 48-8 in the blink of an eye.
Snook’s 20-yarder capped the half and, in the fourth period, Shane Reynolds scored from 20 and Preston Aukland (7-for-70 yards) from 13 to complete the rout.
The MA defense this time allowed South Beloit just 96 total yards, all but two of those from Pilz (11-for-57 rushing, 5-of-17 passing for 37). Michael Killelea added a third-quarter INT to the win.
“We had an excellent start to the game,” said Sobos coach Jason Ware. “They came out fired up and played well, but when you have a first quarter like that, the question becomes, ‘Can you sustain it?’ The truth was, we just couldn’t do it. … That’s what it is, you have to do the best with what you have, and what we have is a lot of sophomores and freshmen. …
"The one thing I can say is that our guys didn’t quit. They didn’t make some plays, but they’re growing and learning.”
