AREA ROUNDUP: Fighting Irish run to huge win in Westmont

WESTMONT — The Seneca Fighting Irish and host Westmont Sentinels were both looking for a bounceback win after suffering their first losses of the season in Week 3.
Friday night, the Irish found that win ... big time.
Seneca trailed 7-0 at halftime after a last-minute Sentinels score but came out roaring after the break with 30 unanswered second-half points to defeat Westmont 30-7 and improve to 3-1 overall (1-1 Interstate Eight Small). After its first 2-0 start in a decade, the Sentinels slip to 2-2 (0-2).
Logan Bruss starred Friday for the Fighting Irish, carrying the ball 27 times for 229 yards and three Seneca touchdowns.
 
Eureka 21, Fieldcrest 13
At Eureka, the Hornets defeated the Knights in a tight Heart of Illinois Conference Large Division contest, with Fieldcrest's last-minute drive stalling out deep in Eureka territory.
Eureka (3-1, 1-1) led 7-0 after one quarter, and 14-7 at the half and through three periods of play.
Cam Grandy completed 21-of-30 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing for 84 yards and a TD for Fieldcrest (3-1, 1-1). Derek May caught 11 passes for 125 yards, including a TD. Micah Hurd rushed for 91 yards.
 
Fisher 40, FCW 6
At Kellar Field in Fisher, the Falcons fell to the Bunnies in an HOIC Small Division game.
Fisher (2-2, 1-1) led 12-0 after one quarter and built a 40-0 halftime advantage. Dalton Kacvinsky scored the touchdown — an 18-yard run during the final quarter — for Flanagan-Cornell/Woodland (0-4, 0-2).
 
Boys soccer
Earlville-Leland-Paw Paw 2, Hinckley-Big Rock 0
At Earlville, Keegan Johnson netted both goals — with both assists coming from Grant Campbell — for the Red Raiders during their Little Ten Conference win over the Royals.
 
Volleyball
Paw Paw 25-25, IMSA 19-23
At Paw Paw, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Illinois Math and Science Academy in their homecoming match.
Joslyn Hopkins pounded out seven kills, fingerpushed six assists and served up four aces to lead Paw Paw. Brieanna Bevans added four kills. LeeAnn Smith had six assists as well. Defensively, Cassidy Fairchild put down three blocks and Janette Solis came up with seven digs.
 
Boys golf
Newark-Serena 175, Amboy 182, Somonauk 196
At Edgebrook Golf Course in Sandwich on Thursday, the Norsemen upped their dual-meet record to 11-0 by defeating the Clippers and the Bobcats in a triangular meet.
Brett Myre carded a 39 to lead Newark-Serena. That was followed by 43s from Connor Baker and Wyatt Snyder. Rounding out its scoring was Porter Arneson (50).
 
Sophomore football
Herscher 39, Streator 28
At Herscher, the Bulldogs lost an Interstate Eight Conference Large Division game to Herscher.
Streator (2-2, 1-1) got touchdown receptions from Latrell Teamer (two; 65 and 27 yards) and Tavarre Phifer (81 yards) — all thrown by Jimmy Tredway — along with a TD run from Jeremiah Lukes (five yards). Phifer had a couple of two-point conversion runs.
Defensively, Teamer had a fumble recovery.
 
Geneseo 24, Ottawa 8
At Bob Reade Field in Geneseo, the Corsairs led 8-0 after one quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run from Collyn Gustafson and the ensuing two-point conversion run by Ulices Perez. However, they were outscored 24-0 by Geneseo during the final three quarters of their Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division opener.
Gustafson finished with 56 yards rushing on nine carries, while Dalton Gosdin had 47 yards on 11 carries for Ottawa (0-4, 0-1). Defensively, Devin Gende and Gosdin had nine tackles apiece, and Matt Ahearn eight.
