A court-appointed lawyer is now representing a onetime Peru doctor charged with illegally selling prescription drugs. Dr. Constantino Perales, 66, is charged in Chicago federal court with furnishing painkillers to a patient to then be sold on the street. Perales was arrested in August 2013 and is free on bond. Perales had been represented by a private Chicago attorney, but that lawyer withdrew Aug. 15, citing a "breakdown in communication" between him and Perales. On Wednesday, a federal judge found Perales could not afford to hire a new attorney, so the judge appointed Northfield lawyer Mark Kusatzky to defend Perales at government expense. Trial is set for Monday, Dec. 4.
