Streator police promise more manpower after rumors

Addressing rumors of a potential confrontation between two rival motorcycle groups in Streator this weekend, a city police official confirmed Thursday the department is fully aware of the talk and has prepared for any eventuality.

"We have not verified any of the rumors to be true, however, we are taking them seriously," said Deputy Chief Robert Turner on Thursday afternoon.

The city's downtown will play host to the Streator Car Show and Cruise Night on Saturday, among other activities throughout the Labor Day weekend.

"We have asked and will be receiving more manpower available to us from the Illinois State Police, La Salle County Sheriff's Office and the Livingston County Sheriff's Department (for the weekend)," Turner said.

The precautions in Streator come after members of two notorious gangs — the Hell's Angels and the Outlaws — were involved in a fight in downtown Ottawa on Aug. 20. Ottawa police broke up the brawl with the arrest of several participants.

Turner explained he was confident his department was prepared and Saturday's festivities would be peaceful.
