Tryout Sunday for Streator 14U team
Open tryouts will be held this Sunday, August 13, from 1-2:30 p.m. at Northlawn School in Streator for a 14-and-under travel baseball team, the Streator Spikes. Players from outside of the Streatorland area are invited to try out, with catchers asked to bring their gear if they have it.
Any players who can't make the Sunday tryout but are interested in playing on the team should contact coaches Chad Winterrowd (815-257-2423) or Jason Telford (815-674-8054).
Streator Red & White Night August 18
Streator High School's annual Red and White Night will be Friday, August 18, headlined by the varsity football scrimmage. Prior to that will be the sophomore and freshman scrimmages as well as performances from the cheerleading squad and the Streatorettes.
Entry into the scrimmage is a case of water or sports drink for use by the teams during the season.
Lady Rams improve to 3-0
Shepherd softball improved to 3-0 with a 16-6 win over Putnam County. Brynne Sember struck out seven and allowed one run in pitching the win, relieved by Gabby Hortega and Maddie Brue. Hortega (2-for-3, RBI), Zoe Harris (two singles), Ryleigh Stehl (single, triple, two RBIs) and Izzy Garkey (two singles, two RBIs) led the offensive attack.
Woodland softball splits a pair
Woodland's junior high "A" softball team split two games recently, besting Flanagan 13-2 but falling to Pontiac 16-0. Shae Simons (two strikeouts) pitched the win over Flanagan, with Ella Sibert (two hits, two runs scored), Cloee Johnston (two hits, four runs) and Clara Downey (RBI, two runs) led the offense.
Woodland's "B" team won a pair — 16-8 over Flanagan led by Kaleigh Benner (pitching win, five strikeouts), Tori Jacobs (two RBIs, four runs), Masie Benstine (two hits), Haley Arnold (three runs scored), as well as 7-6 over Pontiac spearheaded by winning pitcher Lacee Essman (two hits allowed), the defense of Lizzie Johnson and Kaiden Connor, and a run and an RBI from Jacobs.
IV Warriors hosting girls hoops skills camp
The Illinois Valley Warriors and coach Pat Cinotte will be hosting a high school skills camp on Sunday nights in September and October at the JFK School gym in Spring Valley.
The camp — which will run from 6-8 p.m. on September 24 as well as October 1, 8, 15 and 22 — is open to all high school girls players at any level. The $60 cost includes a camp t-shirt.
