Working Out(side) Of The Box -- Transitions brings healthy living home
In her mission to promote good health, Michele Pfaff is willing to make house calls.
Pfaff, a certified personal trainer and weight loss consultant, recently opened Transitions Health to help clients, no matter what health issues they're facing.
Transitions offers one-on-one personal training at the client's home or other location. Pfaff will bring all the equipment with her. And she's willing to travel within a 30- to 40-mile radius of her home in Sandwich. She offers free consultations before beginning the program so she can customize a program for each client.
"I knew I had to think outside of the box," Pfaff said of deciding to take her business to her clients. "I'm surprised at how well it's been received."
Pfaff also does personal consulting to help educate her clients about proper nutrition and eating habits, ways to combat the onset of diabetes or high cholesterol as well as adding that exercise component needed for a healthy lifestyle. And she has been successful with a 12-week weight-loss program that teaches clients how to eat the low glycemic way.
"We spend a lot of time on label reading," she said. "There is a lot of deception out there. Just because it says low fat doesn't mean it actually is low in fat."
Pfaff is aware personal training can be pricey, particularly in tough economic times. To help offset that, she offers reduced rates for personal training in small groups, maybe three friends who want to work out together.
Dawn Aviles of Montgomery likes the accountability of meeting Pfaff at her home since it's often easy to blow off a trip to the gym. Aviles' mother joins them sometimes and Aviles praised Pfaff for her ability to tailor the workout to each woman's fitness level.
"I wondered if I would get as good of a workout (as I did at the health club), but the workout is always different. It's fantastic," she said. "She keeps on thinking of different things for me to do so I keep showing progress."
Since some clients prefer meeting at a separate location, Pfaff maintains studio space at JC Health and Fitness in downtown Sandwich. She also teaches yoga and circuit training classes weekly, using the For Kids Only day care facility on South Main Street in Sandwich. The circuit training class is 5:30 p.m. Mondays and the yoga class is 5 p.m. Wednesdays.
Pfaff said she's worked a variety of jobs over the years, but creating her business and working with clients toward a healthy lifestyle has been the most rewarding one yet.
"I love seeing people healthy and happy. I get so excited," she said. "That's the biggest thing – to see the results. It makes it all worthwhile."
