Homeowners with limited resources may be able to secure a loan or a possible grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make essential repairs to their homes. Repairs could be for a new furnace, roof, windows, doors or insulation.

The interest rate is 1 percent for families that qualify. For example, on a $5,000 loan the payments would be about $23 per month. If the homeowner is age 62 or older and cannot repay a loan, a grant may be considered.
