For the past two days, Amtrak trains zipped through Streator.
Print this storyA detour brought the California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief through the community Sunday and Monday. According to the Streatorland Historical Society, the Southwest Chief formerly stopped in Streator but the stop was discontinued in 1996. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the two trains made their way through Streator because the normal route was unavailable due to a derailment near Wyanet in Bureau County. BNSF Spokesman Steve Forsberg said 19 cars of a 92-car freight train derailed on Saturday. He said plastic pellets spilled out of one car but no one was injured. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Magliari said the company rerouted passengers on some trains by bus, but the California Zephyr and Southwest Chief were detoured through Streator, adding approximately 32 minutes to those rides and bypassing one of its former stops. "It was two eastbounds and two westbounds each day," Magliari said. "We used to ride through Streator and it's still an available route." |
