Kathy Ferko's eighth-grade class at Wallace Elementary School was the winning class of the annual United Way of Eastern La Salle County coin campaign, bringing in a total of $689.26, about $34.46 per student. As a whole, Wallace brought in the most money, $1,651.32. The coin campaign this year brought in $10,060 countywide, surpassing the goal of $9,000. Classes that were runners-up included: Mollie Nagle and Vicki Wielgopolan at Wallace; Connie Bergeson and John Walters at Deer Park Elementary; Sarah Reusnow at Shepherd Middle School; Mary Vaccari at St. Patrick School; Lindsey Brown at Grand Ridge Elementary and Laura Parks at Rutland Elementary. Prizes that were given to the winning classes were donated from various businesses: McDonald's, Jimmy Johns, Roxy Theater, The Classroom, Handy Foods, Casa Mia, Anne's Hideaway, Book Mouse, Pizza Hut, Kroger, Papa Johns, Village Restaurant, Quiznos, Subway, and T-shirts sponsored by Exelon.
