Michaela Smith of rural Ancona had an unexpected addition to the family in November.

And now she's expecting two more in February.

Michaela won a bred Southdown ewe, which she named Miss Louisville, in a Ewes for Youth essay contest sponsored by the American Southdown Breeders Association. Out of 20 nationwide applicants, Michaela placed in the top five to win the contest.

"She wrote about sheep and whether she raised sheep before," Michaela's mother, Kim Smith, told The Times. "(The contest) asked what would you do with a purebred ewe and what was your experience with sheep."

Michaela entered the contest because whe wanted to start raising her own flock of Southdowns. She has been a member of 4-H for six years.

"She showed them for the last five years," said Kim Smith. "She decided she wanted to start raising her own. Her second-grade teacher Mrs. Jan Durre encouraged her. She's been a really good influence on her."

Michaela, 14, plans to show off Miss Louisville and her offspring next summer.

"She'll show them at the Livingston County 4-H Fair," Kim Smith said.

Michaela was awarded Miss Louisville on Nov. 14 at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. She was accompanied by parents Bob and Kim Smith and her grandfather, Larry Thorp, all of who will help her with raising the ewe.

Miss Louisville was donated by Miller Downs of Carlock.
