MIDLOTHIAN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say the commander of a VFW post in Chicago's southern suburbs has died of injuries suffered when he was beaten and robbed while depositing money from a veterans' fundraiser.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says the 65-year-old Vietnam veteran was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead. Burtner was attacked and robbed Monday at A.J. Smith Federal Bank in Midlothian, where he was depositing money meant to provide flights to Washington for World War II veterans. The robbers got away with some $2,000. An autopsy Thursday showed Burtner died of heart complications caused when his ribs were fractured in the assault. |
