Community House of Arts in Ottawa plans to build its way — log by log — to a Guinness world record.

Caryn Leake said CHAOS plans to beat the Guinness Book of World Records mark for largest Lincoln Logs structure.

"It's previously 10,000 Lincoln Logs," Leake said. "I figure we'd double it."

Vern Larkin of Rochester, N.Y., set the current record in 2001.

Leake said a general outline of the structure will be drawn behind the front window of Jeremiah Joe Coffee. DeWayne Cronkright, owner of Jeremiah Joe, said the Guinness Book of World Records states the Lincoln Logs must create a self-standing, supportive structure. He said plans for how to best execute the project are still being discussed.

Leake is considering painting or woodburning the names of sponsors on the wood pieces and selling off the logs after it's taken down as a fundraiser.

The structure will hopefully be complete by Abraham Lincoln's birthday — Friday, Feb. 12 — and CHAOS plans to leave it up for several weeks. The exact date when the building will begin hasn't been decided.

This is an idea Leake plans to sell to Oprah Winfrey herself.

"(CHAOS staff) keep laughing at the office because I say I'm sending it to Oprah," Leake said.

CHAOS is looking for Lincoln Logs in good condition to donate to the project. CHAOS is located at 529 Columbus St., Ottawa, and can be reached at 815-433-2787.
