Somonauk High School physical education teachers Curt Alsvig and Sara Gunderson completed two fitness certification courses through Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. The first course was the Primary Group Exercise Certification, which focused on teaching basic exercises through group instruction. The second was Resistance Training. This course focused on adding variety to basic exercises and incorporating a number of alternate training techniques into instruction.
Print this storyOne goal in Somonauk's Plan for Teaching and Learning, the district strategic plan, focuses on wellness and developing lifelong learners. In support of this goal, students now can choose classes that are centered on lifelong fitness as an alternative to traditional P.E. classes that focus on game instruction. In these classes, P.E. teachers are demonstrating exercises for specific muscle groups and modeling how to create a goal and develop an exercise routine to support a goal. Once a goal and routine are created, students are logging daily progress in journals and sharing it with their instructors. Some sections of the lifelong fitness include yoga, Pilates and extreme DVD workouts two days a week. The fitness classes also focus on resistance training that utilizes bands, Swiss balls and bosu balls and stability discs to give students a better understanding of the alternative pieces of equipment a fitness center may offer. The focus of these classes is to develop knowledge of a healthy lifestyle as well as develop exercise training skills students can utilize after high school. |
