Several members of the Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International were on hand at South Wilmington Grade School Oct. 15 to present books to teachers and read in classrooms. Print this storyClassroom readers included Omicron members Pauline Brown, Paula Freepartner, Wilma Gehrke, LaVonne Larson, Mary Mitchell, Jean Naretto and Lynn Bertino-Neville. The Martha Slyter Fund was established after the death of former Grundy County Assistant Superintendent of Schools Martha Slyter. President of Omicron Chapter from 1964 to 1966, Slyter bequeathed $5,000 to the Lambda State Foundation for Educational Studies. The Foundation was created by Lambda State to provide financial assistance to Lambda State members, chapters or coordinating councils that are working on an educational research or other innovative project which will improve and enhance the education of students in Illinois. Omicron Chapter received $416 to purchase 35 read-aloud books for South Wilmington classroom teachers. Omicron Chapter wanted to honor the memory of Martha Slyter by sharing her love of books with children in Grundy County. In January, the Martha"s Books committee, Pauline Brown, Judy Hooper, Paula Freepartner and Charlotte Farrell will begin the process of applying for a third grant. |
