Two Quad Cities-area men, charged with robbing a Peru bank Friday afternoon, were caught in Ottawa shortly after the holdup.
Print this storyChad R. Diederich, 36, Carbon Cliff and 53-year-old Richard M. Rigg, Rock Island, are each charged with aggravated robbery. Peru Police said one of the men gave a note to a teller at Peru Federal Savings Bank, 914 Shooting Park Road, demanding money and suggesting he had a gun. The man fled in a light blue car with another man. The robbery occurred at 5 p.m. Police said they transmitted a description of the robber and his car on the statewide Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network, which led a trooper 22 minutes later to spot the suspect's car going east on Interstate 80 near Ottawa. The trooper followed the car as it turned onto Route 71 and made its way to Route 23. Once on Route 23, the car turned north. Police reinforcements were called and near Etna Road, police pulled over the car and arrested Diederich and Rigg. Besides state police, Ottawa Police and sheriff's deputies participated. Diederich and Rigg were taken to the county jail. Diederich, who has been in prison, has convictions in Rock Island County for aggravated robbery, forgery, retail theft, resisting police, theft, and driving under the influence. The Times could not determine Saturday if Rigg has a criminal record. |
